In the Greek legislation, occupational diving (not addressing Scientific Diving) is regulated by the Official Gazette  978/B/28-11-1995 (Available in greek at https://www.e-nomothesia.gr/kat-naytilia-nausiploia/kanonismoi-limenon/ya-3131-1-20-1995.html),

On the other hand, Law 3409/2005 regulating recreational diving, has a special mention on Diving for Research (Article 16), recognizing the capacity of HCMR to regulate its diving activities for research purposes through an internal regulation, which is proposed by HCMR and validated by the respective ministries.

The current internal regulation of HCMR (2009) defines roles, activities, safety requirements, and operational procedures for research diving, and is followed during all scientific diving activities. It also covers mixed-gas and CCR diving.

Minimum requirements to operate under any capacity in the scientific diving unit are: (a) CMAS 2*, Rescue Diver or equivalent certification; (b) valid (annual) medical certification; (c) insurance covering diving (provided by HCMR for its own employees).

Diving is formally recognized as a research activity at HCMR and for every diving operation a dive plan has to be completed and validated by the diving officer, as well as a diving log after the end of the operations. Dives, as well as work aboard vessels, are compensated.

HCMR also operates a professional diving facility (according to the Greek legislation covering occupational diving) and some members of the scientific diving unit are certified professional divers.

The current internal regulation of HCMR on scientific diving is currently undergoing a revision and will be resubmitted for validation.

Other scientific diving operators in Greece apart from HCMR, include university departments (Biology, Marine Sciences, Geology) and the Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities, directly attached to the Ministry of Culture. The latter performs its diving operations under relevant legislation (FEK1212/2003), while university departments have no relevant legislation, nor internal regulatory mechanisms concerning diving activities.
